Soar Seminar 2: Concentration
Now that you have completed the study skills survey. Let's talk a bit about concentration. Read the following article on concentration. Answer the following questions below as a comment. Comment on at least two other's posts:
http://www.studygs.net/concent.htm
1. How well do you concentrate in general? How about while studying? How about during movies? How about during class? How about when your friends talk?
2. Based on how you answered the above questions what do you think affects how well you concentrate? How could use this awareness to help you concentrating when studying?
3. As college students, you are assigned lengthy reading assignments that are sometimes difficult to concentrate and focus on. The article mentions SQR3 reading method. Click on the SQR3 link and read. Explain in your own words what this method is and would you use it? Do you think it might be helpful with your reading assignments? Why or why not?
4. Based on this article tell us one tip or advice you think you might follow that you read about.
1. In general, I can concentrate on something if I try to focus on it. While studying, I find it a bit harder to concentrate on the material that I am studying. During a movie, if the movie is interesting and I find it to my liking, I will have no problem concentrating on it. However, during class, I have a very difficult time concentrating. I constantly find my mind wandering; and I am constantly checking the time. While my friends are talking, I am usually involved and can concentrate quite well. Of course this would depend on the subject they are talking about, but since they are my friends, I try my hardest to pay attention.
ReplyDelete2. I have trouble concentrating on things that don't interest me. By being aware of this, it means that I need to change my studying methods. I will need to come up with some different and somewhat fun ways to study so that I can concentrate.
3. The SQ3R method is a reading method that is designed to help you remember things in an article. First, you have to skim through the chapter and read the headings. Then you turn the headings into questions which you should be able to answer after reading the selection. Then, you should read the section, summarize it, and review it everyday after that. I would use the SQ3R method for English. It would help with reading assignments because you're doing a lot with this one piece of work.
4. After reading this article, I will try to follow the "Be Here Now" strategy. Also, I am going to try to set up a worry time so that my mind wouldn't wander so much while I am studying.
I agree Jennifer, it seems like regardless of what it is in a classroom, my mind wanders and I spend a lot of time looking at the clock anticipating for class to end. I can't concentrate on things that don't interest me either, but I think thats with everybody.
Delete1. In general, I do not have total concentration unless something serous is going on. A movie has to be good from beginning to end for me to concentrate during the entire movie. While studying I have total concentration up to twenty minutes. After thirty minutes i loose focus and have to remind my self to get back on track.During class I only concentrate when we are taking notes. If the teacher is just talking I often find myself thinking about other things. Majority of the time my friends have my full undivided attention and I concentrate on what they are saying. My friends sometimes talk just to hear themselves talk and I do not concentrate on what they are saying.
ReplyDelete2.I do not concentrate when things are boring to me and are drawn out for long periods of time. When studying , I can make fun studying games so that the material is more interesting to me so that I am able to concentrate.
3. The SQ3R reading method is a method that is supposed to help the reader understand the material as well as remembering the material. The method is made to help you gain knowledge from the material by analyzing the text. Even though SQ3R would be beneficial to me , I would not use the method because I feel as though there are other methods that will help me to gain knowledge from reading material.
4. One tip or advice that I would follow would be "Here I Study" strategy. I like the idea of putting away my phone, removing all distractions, and being dedicated to studying.
I think the "Here I Study" strategy could be very efficient when it comes to studying. I know I usually study while listening to music and texting people at the same time. The texting it is a distraction. If I put my phone away it would help me focus more on my studying.
DeleteI don't think anybody concentrates on things when they are boring. I agree with you and Jennifer on the "Here I study" strategy. If I could just get rid of my phone, I would solve most of my problems and save time. I always tried to listen to music while studying, but it never would work for me.
DeleteI think the Here I Study method is good to go off of because it is a quieter way to study but it also is very boring.
DeleteHow well I concentrate generally depends on what it is exactly that I have to give my attention to, but over all my concentration isn't that bad. When it comes to sitting in a class and listening to a lecture a teacher is giving, my concentration is not the best. I usually zone out and starting thinking about a lot of other things or get distracted by my phone or other things. But if i'm putting my focus on just about any other thing, I can concentrate well, especially if its something of my interest. When I study I ALWAYS get distracted by my phone, even when I try to ignore it, I think about what it is that I ignored. When my friends talk, sometimes I don't care to listen so I tune it out, but if its something I want to hear, then I can listen very well.
ReplyDeleteI think that my surroundings like my peers and other little things affect how well I concentrate. It is so easy to lose focus on something, thats why I like to study where there is little to no interaction or noise. My phone is a distraction to everything, and I think that since I can be very observant, that affects my concentration as well.
SQR3 method is to help you get better at understanding and comprehending of the material they are reading and going over. Yes the method would be very beneficial for me, and I need to use it now, even though I probably wouldn't because I just wouldn't make time to go through all those different tips.
One tip or advice I would follow would be to look at the title an subtitle before I start reading and ask questions, and when I read look for answers to those questions I asked.
The SQR3 method does seem very tedious. I'm not sure if I can actually follow through with it either. When I have to read an assignment for class, I would just flip open the book and read. I think the SQR3 method is useful because of all the activities that it does with this one piece of reading. The more you do with an article, the better you can remember it.

ReplyDeleteFlipping open the book and reading is the best and fastest way but I have to read it two or three times to understand it but I usually just read it once.
Delete1) I concentrate sometimes in general other times I will get lost in thought about a trip or impossible thing the teacher said or I heard. I don't study at all so I don't get distracted. In movies I pay attention to the movie because it's really loud. I would do the same thing that I said in the first sentence in class. I would listen to my friends say stuff unless it's about minecraft or something.
ReplyDelete2)The time I think about thinks and not pay attention is something that affects my attention. I could space out about my studies but that's highly unlikely.
3)This method is to make the reading assignment longer than it already is but it looks like it would help. I think I would use the survey part of the whole thing. This would help with the reading assignment because it is a well organized plan most likely made by professionals.
4)I would pick another place to study at.

ReplyDeleteIn general I think that I can focus on pretty well. If I have a nice quit place to study I can study and do homework. During movies a can concentrate if the movie is good and if no one is talking. In class I can pay attention if nothing exciting or crazy is happening, while my friends are talking I usually focus on them and listen. People around me extremely affect the way I learn and how I study, if I can hear someone else’s music or someone is talking or doing something odd, it will distract me. I can use this awareness to help me study by trying to pick quit places to study and try to learn to I ignore people around me while studying. The SQR3 method is a longer route for reading, if you are a person that doesn’t remember things you read right after you read them this method is for you. I think it could be helpful to me with certain reading assignments but not all. One tip that I will start to follow is while I am studying to keep Farm (my puppy) out of my room while I study or do homework because he is one big adorable distraction.
ReplyDelete1. I concentrate well when the whole classroom is concentrating but as soon as someone makes a noise or gets off track that distracts me. I never really took studying as seriously as i should/could have, but when I did try to study I never accomplished it because I always got distracted. I can watch and movie and tell you everything that happened from beginning to end if its an interesting movie. During class there is always alot of people doing their own thing and making noises so i cant really concentrate thats why i sometimes ask to do my work elsewhere because of the things people do. I pay attention to what people say if its not out of the way or
ReplyDelete2. I think I affect the way i concentrate. Im my own person, with my own mind, and make my own decisions. Im still maturing and learning so I’ll eventually learn how to completely tune unnecessary things out and pay very close attention. I also need to keep my phone off while in class because thats another object that distracts me.
3. The study habits that they suggested can be very helpful. To sum them up, basically you have to believe in yourself, tell yourself you can do it; be determined, push yourself beyond your limits when neccessary; relax, calm down and dont try to rush every thing at once; take breaks, dont do one thing all day. I will apply some of these tools in my studying habits.
