In order to improve my study habits, I would like to start studying more and take notes while studying to help keep myself focused.
In my school, I have found my SOAR period and the library to be the best places for studying.
I think that college students create study groups to help themselves understand the material that was taught in class and to motivate and encourage each other while studying. I do not have a study group, because I never thought about setting one up.
An advice that I would give an 8th grader would be to pay attention in class and take notes to help stay on task.
I believe that at my age, aquiring good study habits is more important. If you have good study habits, then you probably also have other useful skills that will help you in the future, such as being able to stay focused on a task and paraphrasing complex sentences.
I agree with you Jennifer, I can study best in soar and at the library and study groups are a good benefit in motivating a student.
DeleteI agree with Jennifer a hundred percent. Study groups are not something us teens think of and we all should make a effort to form one. Good study habits are certainly important for teens are age and will prepare us to be successful in other courses.
DeleteI actually think at WECHS you guys study a lot and study with each other a lot. However, you just do not go that extra step and label it a "study group." By not going that extra step the study session may not feel as formal and awkward to you all but it also may cause the study group to lack clear goals and objectives and may not be as effective at times.
DeleteForming study groups does not have to seem awkward and I think you all would benefit from setting up a formal study group where you invite people form your class to meet you in the library or after class like you have to do when you go to college. In college you form study groups not just for study purposes but also to form connections, relationships, and network among your major and soon to be career colleagues. This networking becomes critical when you are competing for that great internship or first job or promotion later in life. Study groups are important for you to not only get use to participating in but hopefully even leading them to really stand out in your future career choice.
If you took notes while you are studying would that make it worse because it would be like an unending chain of note and that would take forever. The advice for the eight grader is pretty good.
DeleteAt WECHS, we do study with each other a lot, but no one has labeled it as a study group. I would benefit with a study group, but it would really just depend on who all is in that group. Sometimes, things can get accomplished and sometimes, nothing gets accomplished.
DeleteI feel like i can completley agree with you on studying in the library as though for soar i cant focus. I can only go to soar once a week due to my schedule and by the time i get in there i have ran around all over the place and already late at that so i cant get in the study mood per say

A resolution that I would like to make that would improve my study habits would be to stop procrastinating . I do study but I do it at the last minute. A aspect I would change would be to come up with more methods for studying. More studying methods would motivate me study more and not put it off at the last minute.
I found that the best places to study at WECHS is the library at Cape Fear and my SOAR class.
I believe that college students form study groups to get a better understanding of the material .Since I became a junior I do not have a study group because I have not taken the time out to do so.
The best advice for a eight grader would be to make sure you understand the material before you begin studying because studying something you don't understand will not benefit you on the test .I also would tell a incoming freshman that they need to review their notes daily because if they wait till the day of the test their basically just cramming everything in.
Something that would be most important at my age is writing down all your due so that you are able to plan out when and what to study in the proper amount of time.
I also procrastinate when it comes to studying. I really dislike studying and put it off until the day before a test. Your resolutions seems like it would be an efficient one. With better studying methods, students might be more motivated to study.
DeleteProcrastination is my main problem of them all, I agree, I need to come up with more study habits as well. That is good advice for eighth graders, and ourselves as well. I know that I wouldn't be as lost and confused in class if I preview the material just to get a small understanding of what is going to be discussed.
DeleteLearning how to break procrastinating tendencies can be a huge stress reliever! I still struggle a bit with this as most people do but I have trained my self to just kick myself in gear and get it done.
DeleteI have learned that not taking the first step to start accomplishing something or waiting until the last minute to finalize can make me feel bad and like I have something looming over my head. I would rather get it done sooner than later and enjoy my free time with out worrying if that I am neglecting an important tasks.

To better my study habits, I know it would be helpful if I got ride of all distractions to me, mainly my phone and t.v. I need to start asking more questions on things in class and getting more detail on a subject so that when I do independent studying I can give myself a better understanding.
Since our school is so small there isn't to many places, but when I can I like to study in a empty room with no noise, but I like to go sit in the library in a room because it is much more quiet and less distracting.
Since college is where you are basically on your own, doing your own work, people like to form study groups because they may need to understand something better that was taught in class they didn't understand, or someone may need to get caught up on something.
The advice I would give to an eighth grader about study habits in high school would be to prioritize, stay organized, and never procrastinate, and that is just advice for everything.
At my age I think acquiring good study habits is more important, because by studying or reading over assigned material, you can gain knowledge. I think that at my age it is important to get an education and knowledge isn't just something gained in a classroom.
My phone is also a huge distraction to me and I believe that we both should put away our phones when its time to study. Not asking enough questions is also my problem and when its time for me to study I'm all confused. So asking more questions would most definitely be beneficial to us in future classes.
DeleteI think that one problem for most every teen would be that we always study with our cellphones near us; and we always listen to music while studying too. I like to think that it helps me while I'm studying, but it really doesn't. Also, I really like your piece of advice to the 8th grader. It makes a lot of sense and it is very helpful.
DeleteI suggest using your phone as an incentive while studying. Tell yourself you can not check your phone until you have read to page XX. Or until you have completed writing this or that. Once you have completed your tasks then check your phone and get your phone fix. Put it away until your next phone incentive break while studying. I have to do this when doing my job as a teacher. For example, on days I have a lot of assignments to grade I don't check my phone, email or facebook until I have graded x amount of assignments. It helps motivate me and gives me a tangible and real time award to work toward.
DeleteI can agree with you on the distractions anything from my pgone to starting to day dream and getting up to eat even when im not hungry. i have to sit there and tell myself to get things done and mabey creating a schedule for myself would help me out!

-In order to study better, I guess I should start to study. I don't really study because I get distracted by the smallest things, and I have a hard time focusing on a single thing for too long.
-I don't really study on campus. I just think there are too many distractions at school. I rarely study at home either.
-College students form study groups in order to succeed in a class. Studying in groups is more efficient than studying on your own. I do not have a study group because I prefer to work and study on my own. I feel that if I am studying with another person that I will get distracted and become off-topic.
-For an eighth grader, the best advice that you can tell them is to pay attention from the first day of class. As long as you do the work when it is assigned, and do it well, you should do good in the class.
-Personally, I think that knowledge is better than study habits at my age. I think that you can develop study habits at anytime, it's just easier to learn them sooner.
I disagree that you can develop study habits at anytime. I believe the way you study in high school will carry over into college. It is hard to break habits. I believe you can acquire knowledge at anytime but it is what you do with the knowledge that is more important. Also being able to study and apply knowledge to your studies is what is crucial and leads one to genius and innovative discoveries and ideas. If you learn to study well at a young age it will carry on into college and later into your career. Study habits are synonymous with work habits. My advice is to train yourself to practice proper, effective, and productive study habits now so you develop a proper, effective, and productive work ethic later in life and can inspire, create, discover, and innovate.
DeleteYeah I think you should start studying because it is very bad not to.

I guess if I had to change anything I would change the fact that I don't spend much time studying. I would change by making more time to study instead of just wasting time. The best place in my school is in room 115 and that's my SOAR room. I think college students form study groups because if they have questions then they can ask their study group. I don't have a study group because I don't really need a study group and I don't really interact with people. I would say to study more in high school and not slack off even though high school classes are easy. I think acquiring knowledge is more important than developing study habits because developing study habits won't help me in the future in my job.
Hi Codie. I disagree that study habits will not help you in your job. The same principles you have to apply to studying are directly related to holding and maintaining a good job and work ethic...preparation, time management, self-motivation, staying on task, staying focused, setting and achieving goals, networking with others in your field of study...all of these your learn to do via studying and thus you carry on later in life in your career. Why do you think studying will not help you in your future career?

DeleteYou don't have to study anything in a career like you don't have to study grading papers or anything you just have to read and grade.

ReplyDeleteI could make a schedule that works around my classes and chart what class I will be studying and for how long. I usually study frequently for short amounts of time so that I can remember the information better. The CFCC library is usually a good place to study because it is quit and there aren’t a lot of distractions. I think many colleges form study groups to help each other learn and remember the information in the class. I think that sometimes study groups can work but not all of the time. I study best alone, because I am a very social person and I like to talk to others. If I had a study group it would probably be very difficult to stay on topic. I would tell an eighth grader that they would need to study take notes and buckle down if they want to succeed in high school. Middle school is a lot different than high school, you won’t be watched over as much and you will need to study and pay attention to achieve the grades you want. At my age I think that it is more important to learn good study skills than to have knowledge because good study skill is the root to knowledge.

ReplyDeleteMy study survey score is below average.
A resolution i would like to make to change my study habit is to actually study when the assignment is given and not procrastinate until the day of the test. I need to start making note cards, going over notes at home and when i have free time. All of this could take place if i put my cell phone down and pay attention so i wont have to ask questions later.
The best places I have found to study are in the library at cfcc, and in soar/adivisory (sometimes).
I think many college students form study groups because its easier to study aloud rather than alone. Also, not everyone has the same study habits so someone else’s study habbits could improve yours. No i do not have a study group because I dont talk to very many people, but I do believe it will be helpful in the future.
Advice I would give an eigth grader is to form a study group or set aside time with their friends to study. Also take advantage of free time when it is given, do not just explore the internet or do things that aren’t school related because you will need every minute you can get to study.
I think acquiring good study habits are important at my age because the more/better you study, the more helpful knowledge you acquire.
My name is Dana Ajeen. My student survey score was 29.I want to be able to change my study habit is to be able to be prepared before the class and study after class when I’ve taken notes. I feel like if i get into the habit of doing that studying a little everyday by looking at and going over my notes up until the test instead of procrastinating and waiting till the last second. I feel like the best place for me to study is in a library I honestly feel like I could never focus when given free time in class or those little study halls in the cafeteria there are too many distractions around and people for me to talk to. When i go to the library however everyone is studying and its absolutely quiet .College students probably create study groups because it helps you to understand and work with others sometimes in a college setting your teacher doesn’t have one on one help with you so it’s good to have other peoples support. I do not have a study group at the moment I don’t know a lot of people in my class. If I were to give an eighth grader advice about study skills in high school I would honestly say do not procrastinate and take it seriously I feel like my freshman year I didn’t take it seriously and I regret it now. I feel like it’s definitely important to have good study skills vs. knowledge because if you can’t study the knowledge you can’t acquire it.
